Welcome To Superior Falls
This is the unofficial home page for Superior Falls located between the boarder between Michigan and Wisconsin on the coast of Lake Superior. Below is a short photo tour of the falls and surroundings. Click on a picture for a larger image.

The entrance to the falls is marked by a small sign on the north side of Lake Road in Michigan. The Montreal river separates Michigan and Wisconsin and serves as host to the falls. There is small hydroelectric power station up stream from the falls.

The superior falls road first takes you to a welcome sign. There is a map of the area surrounding the falls and the power plant. The only people you are likely to see on your trip are other sight seers because the plant is automated.

The falls are visible from both the river bank and the cliff edge. The sign above directs you to a path a short distance away that brings you to the cliff edge. If you can't walk very well or are pressed for time you would be best to see the falls from the cliff edge. The view is just as good as the river bank and it is easier to access.

This is a view of the falls from the cliff edge. There waist high security fence to protect you from falling over the edge. These pictures were taken May 21, 2006. Spring waters have started to subside and it is just a fraction of the full torrent.

If you want to see the falls from the river bank you need to travel back to the road and drive a short distance down the road. The road to the lake is blocked off and you will have to walk the last 300 yards to the shore.

The middle picture is from the upper lookout on the lake shore. It stands on top of the towering rock banks. The right picture is a view looking down the hill leading to the river bed and lake shore. The hill is very very steep - if you can't walk very well you don't want to go down it.

The beach is covered with medium size rocks and usually has a collection of drift wood. If there has been a heavy rain the water around the river might look dirty from the sediment. You will find a path at the base of the hill leading south towards the falls.

Along the way to the falls you will pass the turbine. It is loud but harmless (as long as you aren't swimming). The trail leads around it and you can see the two steel water pipes feeding the water into the generators.

The falls will be a short distance ahead. The path has been eroded by the spring rains but you can easily walk on the river edge. It isn't possible to get to the base of the falls because there is a large pool at the base of the falls with shear rock edges towering above. The pictures below were taken on May 21, 2006.

Below are some pictures of the river and the cliffs.

I trust you enjoyed the tour of Superior Falls. If you find yourself in the neighborhood don't forget to check it out. If you have any questions please email me. Have a great summer!
